Chicken Katsu is a Japanese dish of fried chicken made with panko breadcrumbs and curry sauce. The British who was influenced by the curry from India, introduced the curry to Japan and formed a curry-based dish called Chicken Katsu Curry. Therefore, this is an Indo British Japanese dish.

Ingredients

  • Chicken Breasts – 4

  • Panko Breadcrumbs – 227 gm / 8oz

  • Eggs – 2

  • Plain Flour – 8 tbsps.

  • Onions finely chopped – 1 cup.

  • Ginger – Garlic paste – 2 tsps.

  • Turmeric powder – 1 tsp

  • Coriander powder – 2 tsps.

  • Cumin powder – 2 tsps.

  • Chilli powder – 2- 3 tsps.

  • Black pepper powder -2 tsps.

  • Chicken stock or water – 4 cups

  • Soy sauce – 2 tbsps.

  • Honey – 2 tsps.

  • Oil – 2 tbsps.

  • Oil – for deep frying

  • Salt – to taste

Directions

  • Take the chicken breast and flatten using a food hammer.
  • Marinate the chicken breasts with salt and black pepper.
  • For Curry Sauce
  • Heat oil in a pan, add onions, sauté till softens, then add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for about 5 mins.
  • Mix coriander powder, cumin powder, turmeric powder, chili powder.

  • Add soy sauce, the stock or water and honey. Simmer until it bubbles to form a gravy.
  • For the Fried Chicken
  • Cover the chicken breast with flour, then dip into the beaten Eggs and then coat with panko breadcrumbs.


  • Heat oil in a deep saucepan and gently drop the coated chicken breast into the oil.
  • Fry on both sides until it turns golden brown color.

    Slice the fried chicken into strips and lay over a plate along with salad and a bed of rice. Pour the curry sauce over chicken.

    • Meena, Thank you. Yes, It can be air fried or baked in the oven. When it is air fried, please make sure to use the appropriate temperature settings.
