minutesIrish Soda bread contains flour, baking soda, salt and buttermilk. The term “soda” in the name comes from the baking soda (or “bread soda” in Ireland) used to leaven it instead of yeast and kneading the dough. . One can serve the bread for breakfast or as an accompaniment along with a hot soup.
Ingredients
Whole wheat white flour – 4 cups
Baking soda – 1 ½ tsps.
Buttermilk – 2 cups
Salt – 1 tsp.
Milk – 2 tbsps.
Oats – 2 tbsps.
Directions
- Grease and flour a round pan or a tray.
- Preheat oven to 425°F / 220°C.
- Take a bowl, combine the flour, baking soda and salt.
- Gradually add the buttermilk until the it blends well together to form a dough. This dough will be slightly sticky.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and gently fold a few times to bring it to the shape of a ball and would still have cracks and uneven surface. Then flatten with a rolling pin.
- Make an incision in the form of X with a sharp knife.
- With a brush smear milk on top to glaze it.
- Sprinkle some oats on top.
- Place the dough in the greased baking pan.
- Bake at 425°F / 220°C for 10 minutes.
- Then continue baking at 400°F / 205°C for about 25 minutes.
- Cool on a wire tray. Serve warm with butter.
Notes
- To check if the bread is baked well, you will hear a hollow sound if you tap on the top and bottom of the bread.
- Ensure not to add excess of baking soda or it would develop green patches on the bread.
- One can use plain flour instead of whole wheat flour. Just add 1¾ cups of milk.
